Include personal letters and business papers, 1750-1888, of Michael Wallace (1719-1767), his six sons, and their descendents, concerning medical bills of the Carter family and slaves, tobacco sales, a trip to Scotland, family news, courtship, the mercantile business, lawsuits (in particular a lawsuit pertaining to a slave family), a duel challenge, pensions and land grants of Revolutionary veterans, and land speculation. Include correspondence, 1775-1783, of Wallace family members concerning their service in the Continental Army, work as an army surgeon, camp life at Valley Forge, the Tidewater region of Virginia, and a prisoner of war camp. Include an unexecuted contract for sale of thirty slaves; a letter, 4 April 1864, about Union forces' disruption of travel from Rixeyville, Va., to Culpeper, Va.; will, 1766, of Michael Wallace; will, 1774, of John Wishart, of King George County, Va.; and an inventory, 1888, of Wallace family papers. Include papers, 1775, relating to the estate of Rebecca Wallace, of Galsgow, Scotland; notes, n.d., of a drill for the presentation of firelocks;inventory, 1798, of arms, ammunition, and accoutrements of the 1st Battalion, 25th Regiment of Virginia; ephemera, 1810, pertaining to the Rappahannock Sweepstakes, a horse racing event; and a letter, n.d., from Thomson Mason to Michael Wallace concerning lawsuits and payment of clients's delinquent accounts.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
